Eight things I should know to be ready for college (www.collegeforalltexans.com)

1. Pick the right courses
Check with your counselor to make sure you're following the Recommended High School Program (RHSP) or the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) to get the skills and knowledge you need to go to college.

2. Prepare for higher education and a career at the same time
The College Tech Prep Program combines the courses needed for success in college and the technical courses that prepare students for a career.

3. Earn college credit while you're in high school
Save on the cost of college later with the Advanced Placement Program (AP), International Baccalaureate Program (IB), Concurrent Enrollment or Dual Credit, and/or Articulated Courses. Ask your counselor which are available at your school.

4. Take the required tests
Counselors have PSAT, ACT, and SAT registration and test date information.

5. Use the Common Application for Freshman Admission
If you plan to attend a public university download one at: www.collegefortexans.com/applying/commonapp.cfm or complete it online at www.applytexas.org. Contact community, technical, and private colleges directly for their applications.

6. Explore your interests and get involved
Volunteer. Join a club, sports team, or service organization. Ask people about their jobs. Learn about careers.

7. Get a mentor
Find an adult who can help you navigate the system and succeed. You might look to a counselor, teacher, or other adult you trust.

8. Ask for help
Don't let obstacles sidetrack you. Ask someone you trust for advice and make a plan to overcome difficulties. Find out if your school offers free tutoring. Sign up for a free weekly electronic newsletter (AIEmail) at www.AIE.org to stay on track.
