Key Research Finding:

"Perhaps the high point of the research was the finding of very high aspirations for college, not only among public school students in the Rio Grande Valley, but even among parents, including some of the poorest inhabitants of the area- Colonia residents....Students rely more on their parents for planning on what to do after high school than they do on friends, teachers and counselors...97% of students say they needed help for college preparation. Thus, parents who are key actors in the college readiness process must have access to information and knowledge that will allow them to adequately guide their children".

Programmatic Action:

ENCORE is conducting workshops on college readiness to community-based organizations serving lowincome communities, particularly those working with Colonias. Partnerships have been established with these organizations to raise awareness and educate families living in Colonias on the importance of college readiness and higher education. ENCORE partners provide college readiness materials in English and Spanish to parents, to help them adequately guide their children to graduate high school ready for a college education.

Key Research Finding:

"Many students feel there is a lack of effective resource materials to help them understand what college readiness really is. Many are not aware of changes in graduation requirements...Most high school students favored the development of a good website on college readiness.... [and] indicate that they are willing to take on tougher requirements if it means they would be better prepared for college... ".

Programmatic Action:

ENCORE is the hub for college readiness information in the Rio Grande Valley. Brochures are made available and disseminated to communities and schools to inform students and parents what college readiness is all about. Through the ENCORE website, we provide guidance on college readiness as well as other useful website links that inspire, prepare, and lead students to pursue a college education. In addition, partnerships have been established with numerous school districts in the Rio Grande Valley to provide students with a rigorous and relevant curriculum in the classroom through the implementation of the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (PAS) Program. Ford PAS provides experiences to help students make decisions about their future
