ENCORE Prepares Youth for College
Get Ready. Get College. Get ENCORE.
Edinburg - March 27, 2009

EDINBURG - Middle and high school students met Friday at the Eight Annual Rio Grande Valley Youth Leadership Conference. The event, which took place at Abundant Grace Community Church, was an opportunity for students to learn more about the advantages of attending college and how to use the resources available to make the transition from high school to college easier.

The conference, which is coordinated by the Coalition for Valley Families and other local community organizations, is a response to the conflicts that students in the Valley faced when it comes to getting a college degree. Furthermore, the event focused on motivating low-income and minority students to continue in the path of education with the hope of inspiring them to strive for greatness.

The conference began with a motivational address by Atrevete Youth Services, a local organization focused on mentoring young people, and followed by 13 breakout student sessions where students learned about college and leadership skills.

One of the main presenters of the event, Engaging Communities for College Readiness (ENCORE), conducted three sessions focused on essential steps to prepare for college. During these sessions, students were also provided with an overview of the changing global climate followed by an outline of future earnings based on educational achievement.

"Don't give up in life, and go to college," said a student from Palmview High School.

By the end of the conference the students had a deeper understanding of what it takes for life after high school and how attending college is a priority in today's society.
